    Oculomotor Task-Switching Performance Improves and Persists Following a Single Bout of Aerobic Exercise

    Executive function includes the core components of response inhibition, working memory, and cognitive flexibility. Interestingly, an accumulating evidence has reported that inhibitory control and working memory improve following a single bout of exercise. It is, however, largely unclear whether cognitive flexibility elicits a similar post-exercise benefit. Accordingly, Chapter Two of my thesis examined whether 20-min of aerobic exercise provides an immediate post-exercise ‘boost’ to cognitive flexibility. Chapter Three examined for how long a putative post-exercise benefit persists. Cognitive flexibility was examined via an AABB task-switching paradigm wherein participants alternated between a well-practiced and a novel oculomotor task pre- and post-exercise. Chapter Two showed an immediate post-exercise benefit to cognitive flexibility and Chapter Three demonstrated that the benefit persists for up to 47-min post exercise. As such, my thesis provides convergent evidence that a single bout of exercise benefits each core component of executive function

    Inferences from Interactions with Smart Devices: Security Leaks and Defenses

    We unlock our smart devices such as smartphone several times every day using a pin, password, or graphical pattern if the device is secured by one. The scope and usage of smart devices\u27 are expanding day by day in our everyday life and hence the need to make them more secure. In the near future, we may need to authenticate ourselves on emerging smart devices such as electronic doors, exercise equipment, power tools, medical devices, and smart TV remote control. While recent research focuses on developing new behavior-based methods to authenticate these smart devices, pin and password still remain primary methods to authenticate a user on a device. Although the recent research exposes the observation-based vulnerabilities, the popular belief is that the direct observation attacks can be thwarted by simple methods that obscure the attacker\u27s view of the input console (or screen). In this dissertation, we study the users\u27 hand movement pattern while they type on their smart devices. The study concentrates on the following two factors; (1) finding security leaks from the observed hand movement patterns (we showcase that the user\u27s hand movement on its own reveals the user\u27s sensitive information) and (2) developing methods to build lightweight, easy to use, and more secure authentication system. The users\u27 hand movement patterns were captured through video camcorder and inbuilt motion sensors such as gyroscope and accelerometer in the user\u27s device

    The socio-demographic profile and clinical correlation of Chlamydia trachomatis among infertile women at a tertiary care center in North India

    Background: The frequency of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in infertile Indian women and potential risk factors associated with the infection is not well understood. To improve the primordial prevention C. trachomatis infection in developing countries, there is an urgent need to understand the prevalence of the infection among women with infertility and establish the common risk factors associated with this. This study was conducted to determine prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in infertile women attending an infertility clinic in north India and the associated socio-demographic and clinical features associated with it. Methods: Endocervical swabs, collected from 105 infertile women were tested for C. trachomatis by real time-PCR and direct gram’s stain. A detailed clinical history and examination was done on each subject during sample collection. The study group was then divided into two comparison groups and p factor was determined and factors with significant correlation were established. Results: Total 9 out of 105 infertile women visiting infertility clinic were RT-PCR positive for Chlamydia trachomatis. The socio-demographic factors that significantly correlated with Chlamydia trachomatis infection were lower age group, rural locality and illiteracy. The clinical history and examination findings that significantly correlated with the infection were past history of RTI/STI in the subject, history of RTI/STI in husband, cervical/ vaginal discharge, lower abdominal pain, burning micturition, erythema of genitalia, backache, dyspareunia and dysmenorrhea. The gram’s stain finding confirmed the active infection by presence of pus cells. Conclusions: The study concluded that the socio-demographic risk factor for Chlamydia trachomatis infection among infertile women is lower age group, rural locality and illiteracy while several clinical features that are red flags for the presence of such infection are past history of reproductive tract infection along with partner, cervical/vagina discharge, lower abdominal pain, burning micturition, erythema of genitalia, backache, dyspareunia and dysmenorrhea that should never be overseen

    Role of cytokine in malignant T-cell metabolism and subsequent alternation in T-cell tumor microenvironment

    T cells are an important component of adaptive immunity and T-cell-derived lymphomas are very complex due to many functional sub-types and functional elasticity of T-cells. As with other tumors, tissues specific factors are crucial in the development of T-cell lymphomas. In addition to neoplastic cells, T- cell lymphomas consist of a tumor micro-environment composed of normal cells and stroma. Numerous studies established the qualitative and quantitative differences between the tumor microenvironment and normal cell surroundings. Interaction between the various component of the tumor microenvironment is crucial since tumor cells can change the microenvironment and vice versa. In normal T-cell development, T-cells must respond to various stimulants deferentially and during these courses of adaptation. T-cells undergo various metabolic alterations. From the stage of quiescence to attention of fully active form T-cells undergoes various stage in terms of metabolic activity. Predominantly quiescent T-cells have ATP-generating metabolism while during the proliferative stage, their metabolism tilted towards the growth-promoting pathways. In addition to this, a functionally different subset of T-cells requires to activate the different metabolic pathways, and consequently, this regulation of the metabolic pathway control activation and function of T-cells. So, it is obvious that dynamic, and well-regulated metabolic pathways are important for the normal functioning of T-cells and their interaction with the microenvironment. There are various cell signaling mechanisms of metabolism are involved in this regulation and more and more studies have suggested the involvement of additional signaling in the development of the overall metabolic phenotype of T cells. These important signaling mediators include cytokines and hormones. The impact and role of these mediators especially the cytokines on the interplay between T-cell metabolism and the interaction of T-cells with their micro-environments in the context of T-cells lymphomas are discussed in this review article

    Understanding the Nature and Consequences of Transgressions and Forgiveness in the Workplace in India

    The cultural context of an organisation may significantly shape the nature of transgressions and consequent forgiveness relevant to understanding the workplace outcomes. This study explored the nature of transgressions and the dynamics of forgiveness in the workplace of a heterogeneous Indian sample which have not been well addressed in previous studies. Qualitative research design was employed. Using a purposive sampling method, 48 participants from the government (n = 30) and private organisations (n = 18) were selected to form the final sample. The transcriptions from semi-structured interviews were analyzed by the Thematic Analysis Method. Two themes related to the nature of transgressions emerged: multiplicity of the sources of workplace transgressions (such as anger, discrimination, and work overload) and communications of workplace transgressions (e.g., through criticism, altered relationships, warnings). Concerning the dynamics of forgiveness in the workplace, three broad themes emerged: facilitators of workplace forgiveness (such as positive treatment, direct communication, scolding), barriers to workplace forgiveness (like, the intention behind wrongdoing, repetition of wrongdoing, decreased trust), and benefits of workplace forgiveness (such as positive emotions, good relations, healthy work environment). Management should develop an in-depth understanding of the nature of transgressions and the dynamics of forgiveness embedded in a specific cultural context which may help enhance a variety of positive organisational outcomes. Workplace transgressions and concomitant forgiveness are interwoven with the nature of organisations, individual level factors and socio-cultural contexts. Findings also provide some support that the coexistence of individualistic and collectivistic cultural values among Indians may have shaped workplace transgressions and consequent forgiveness

    Recent Strategies for the Remediation of Textile Dyes from Wastewater: A Systematic Review

    The presence of dye in wastewater causes substantial threats to the environment, and has negative impacts not only on human health but also on the health of other organisms that are part of the ecosystem. Because of the increase in textile manufacturing, the inhabitants of the area, along with other species, are subjected to the potentially hazardous consequences of wastewater discharge from textile and industrial manufacturing. Different types of dyes emanating from textile wastewater have adverse effects on the aquatic environment. Various methods including physical, chemical, and biological strategies are applied in order to reduce the amount of dye pollution in the environment. The development of economical, ecologically acceptable, and efficient strategies for treating dye-containing wastewater is necessary. It has been shown that microbial communities have significant potential for the remediation of hazardous dyes in an environmentally friendly manner. In order to improve the efficacy of dye remediation, numerous cutting-edge strategies, including those based on nanotechnology, microbial biosorbents, bioreactor technology, microbial fuel cells, and genetic engineering, have been utilized. This article addresses the latest developments in physical, chemical, eco-friendly biological and advanced strategies for the efficient mitigation of dye pollution in the environment, along with the related challenges
